Repetitive Stress Injuries and a Really Wimpy Generation
I will be the first to admit I haven’t played much with the Wii. It does seem very fun and Reia loves going to our neighbor’s house and playing for hours as long as I will let her. Therefore, I cannot attest to the authenticity of the news report I just watched discussing the “repetitive stress injuries associated with even moderate amounts of time on the Wii.”
A little elbow pain. Fingers hurt from grasping the controller. ARE YOU KIDDING ME????
Nintendo comes out with a toy that lets you feel like you are really excersising without actually doing the work, and people still complain.
“Doc, my elbow hurts when I move it like this.”
“Then don’t move it like that and get off the Wii.”
On another note or actual importance (to me anyway) I’m buying one of these. Our PE teacher at school introduced me to the fitness hoop. She looks great. OK, she already did, BUT she really likes this thing because she can hula hoop for 10 minutes while watching a little tube every day and is getting a teeny tiny waist. Her hoop is filled with water in order to weight it down, so I am going to find out if that in itself makes a diff.
If you’ve never been a good hooper, I have tried the water weighted one she owns. The fact that it is weighted helps to keep it up on your hips. Anyone else tried one??
Actually, I can totally see that happening with the wii. Aaron suggested they put a warm up section on it. Let me know how your fitness hoop works!
Lorren I just found a typo and you didn’t say anything. I’m so proud. =)
I actually felt like I had tennis elbow after playing the Wii continuously for about 6 hours one day. It’s like playing the real thing!
My fingers do kinda cramp up on Guitar Hero sometimes, but I’m not complaining. I guess people can’t deal with a “video game system” where kids actually have to do things other than sit on a couch.
John, tennis is what Reia loves to play. I’d love to have one for her here at the house so she can “practice” when it’s cold outside.
I just think it’s funny. No matter what, there always seems to be a problem.
The Wii is a total workout and SO much fun! We just got ours so I will let you know if I still think that in a month!!! We bought ours from a friend who wanted a Play Station 3 instead. The only problem I have found so far is that you don’t get an even workout unless you alternate arms… meaning, I am really only working out my right arm from tennis, bowling or baseball. However, the boxing works out all of you and will make you break a sweat!
SUPER FUN!
No Wii-related repetitive stress injuries at our house yet. But there are some limits on the amount of screen time Ben has. I love that the Wii will suggest that you take a break if you’ve been playing for a while. It will also show you a log of how long it’s been used each day - now that’s accountability!
I bought a hula hoop a few years ago (the cheap Walmart variety), when I was thinking that playing outside with Ben would be a great addition to my workouts. I loved it the few times I used it, but right now it’s quite dusty in our garage. Maybe I will bring it out again this spring! Because my winter hibernation seems to be catching up with me
Robin, I see what you did instead of calling me at 8:39 this morning
And actually, I was asleep–for the first time in weeks, I actually slept the entire night, so thank you! for not calling!! BUT–call me soon! We need to get back in touch!! And I’d call you, but I’m guessing it’ll take me a year to find your new number. Must. write. it down.
So funny! I did boxing on Wii the other night and the next morning my arms were soooooooo sore!
I so want a Wii for my 32nd birthday!
